being the best of 2011. x8.

01/03/2012

I know we are all trying to put 2011 behind us, but one more thing before we jump head first into 2012… Then, I promise, I’ll shut up about it all.

I’m proud to say that some of my articles and contributions have made Best of 2011 lists this year. It was just about this time last year that I booked my first freelance job with Red Tricycle and I began contributing as the Seattle Scout for Stroller Traffic soon after. I hold both places near and dear to my heart, so these are happy moments for me.

being the 2011 list. a look back.

12/31/2011

Remember that 2011 List I made at the beginning of the year?

I’ve been dreading going back and re-visiting it because I don’t feel like I paid much attention to it as 2011 got busier and busier and BUSIER.

But, here goes nothing…

You can read the original post HERE.

THE MONTHLY CHALLENGES.

JANUARY: Write one thank you note to someone in my life everyday of the month. – I did tackle this project and sent out a huge stack of thank you notes towards the end of January.

FEBRUARY: Learn to sew — by hand and with a machine. – I don’t even know where the sewing machine is right now.

MARCH: Spend one day a week baking. – Funny.

APRIL: Call and say hi to someone in my life every other day. – Who’s laughing at this one?

MAY: Keep a daily journal. – I’m going to say yes, because I blogged every day. That works.

JUNE: Read instead of watching TV during the daytime. – Nope.

JULY: Watch all the Harry Potter movies. – Again, no. I must do this asap.

AUGUST:To be determined.

SEPTEMBER: To be determined.

OCTOBER: Play cards with Josh in the evenings twice a week. – I wish. Although, I just kick his ass anyway, so what’s the point? (wink, wink, honey.)

NOVEMBER: To be determined.

DECEMBER: To be determined.

RANDOM 2011 TO-DOs

Take a week-long family vacation to the beach. – We chose to stay home instead, mainly because we were to exhausted and busy to prep to be at the beach for a week, although, we did take some weekend trips to the beach instead. Read about them HERE and HERE and HERE.

Go camping. – Took a camping trip in Leavenworth with Josh’s sisters and their families. Lots of swimming, bike riding and time with cousins. Read more HERE.

Put as much money into savings as possible. – We’re better off financially than we were a year ago, for sure.

Finally print and hang pictures around the house. – YES! Although, I still have some blanks in our picture wall and I do have more to hang, but progress, nonetheless.

Have friends over for dinner more often. – Not as much as we’d like. This needs to be a priority for 2012.

Have a monthly date night. – Not every month, but I’d say more often.

Finish landscaping the backyard. – Didn’t happen.

Establish an office area in the house. – We did create an office area. Hopefully this nook can be perfected next year.

Read a book every month. – Pretty close!

Go visit Kassie in Portland. – Sadly, no. Although, we were lucky enough to have our Kissy come visit in March for my 30th birthday.

Get Everett a passport. – Putting this on my ASAP to-do list.

Teach Janie to ride her bike without training wheels. – She’s super close.

Participate in the March of Dimes walk for Team Meggers. – In the pouring rain, at that!

Update Josh and my wardrobe. – This will never end. Mine is a little better. Josh’s still needs some work.

Finish the bunkbeds for the girls. – One of the best things about 2011! Read more HERE.

Finish decorating Everett’s room. – I didn’t even try. Although, we did just buy him curtains. Blackout curtains.

Finish decorating Janie & Meg’s room. – It’s almost complete and will be in the next month.

Reach 100 Being5 Facebook followers. – Success! And I’m almost to 150 now.

Get to an average of 500 daily blog readers. – Hmmm. I’ll need to look.

Relaunch Dress Me. – No. And it’s not going to happen. Thankfully, I have some great outlets for writing about children’s style now. And, I get paid to do it. Bonus!

Send birthday cards to everyone in my calendar on time. – Sorry, friends and family. In fact, 100% of birthday presents were late this year too. That’s horrible.

Attend BlogHer in San Diego in August. – I didn’t make it because I chose to take a trip to LA to meet up with friends instead. More on that HERE.

Teach Meg all her letters and numbers. – Didn’t even need to teach her. She just knows them. Cutie pie.

Get back up to running five-miles comfortably. – Not quite. Although, I do feel comfortable running again.

Take one evening a week for myself, out of the house. Have Josh do the same, in his garage. – Because I’ve had to take a lot of time to work, this hasn’t happened. I hope to make this a reality in 2012.

Be a supportive and encouraging wife. – I hope I have been. I think I’ve improved, at least.

Be a patient and kind mother. – I think I’ve been a better mother in many ways this past year and a worse mother in other ways, mostly due to working at home. You win some, you lose some, right?

Do more crafts with the kids. – Not really. But, I’ve tried to be encouraging of their creativity by making sure that they always have the craft supplies they need and not bitching about crafty-messes.

Establish Friday night as family fun night — games and movies and dessert. –No…

Make cafe style curtains for our kitchen. – Definitely no…

Figure out how I can wear my wedding rings again. – My allergy seems to be improving. Time will tell.

Be a more available friend. – Big fail. BIG FAIL.

Establish a chore routine and allowance for the girls. – No.

Communicate with my brothers and their families more. – Maybe a little? No. Not really. I’m not a great sister, honestly.

Take a picture every day and use Project Life’s Digital Book to organize them every week. – Didn’t happen.

Give our kitchen chairs and table a make-over. – Finally, a yes! Josh put new seats on them and they looked great. Until the kids starting spilling food and drinks all over them. I see new, easy to wipe down kitchen chairs in our near future.

Drink more champagne. (as inspired by laura willard.) – I ordered champagne as often as I could.

Get more professional writing jobs. – For the love of god. Yes. So thankful. So busy. It’s fantastic.

Have an amazing 30th birthday. – Many of you were here. It was wonderful.

Have an amazing, fun-filled summer with the kids. – We did. Busy, but fun.

Go to the dermatologist for a full body scan thing. – Oops. No.

Make a recipe binder. – Again, no.

Make a household binder with important info, packing lists, supply lists, kid info, etc. – One more time, no.

Make an emergency supply kit for our home. – I’ve added to our water supply!

LIVE IN THE PRESENT. (again, thanks LW. good reminder. so hard to do. obviously.) – I’m going to say yes on this one. I’ve tried hard not to live with my head in my day planner, to be more spontaneous and to take each moment as it comes.

Well, I don’t really know what to make of all this. There are some things on here that I forgot about all together. My life has taken a 180 since I wrote this list — from the beginning of the year until the end, so at this point, a list like this seems so unrealistic to me. Make a RECIPE BINDER? For the love of god, I just hope I can remember to FEED THE CHILDREN these days. Will I make another list like this for 2012? I’m still undecided. I always have a running to-do list in my head — personal, family, professional and household — but maybe there are bigger things to focus on right now…

Tell me, did you accomplish what you hoped to in 2011? How do  you feel heading into the new year?

being 14 pictures of our kids that i did not take.

12/30/2011

Thank goodness that Kaitlyn, our lovely nanny, can get great pictures of the kids, because I can never seem to. She just sent me a huge batch of them — enjoy.

being my last $200 from onlineshoes.com.

12/29/2011

It’s a sad day, my dear shoe-loving friends.

I received my last $200 gift certificate for being the winner of the OnlineShoes.com ShoeStakes earlier this year. An entire 11-months filled with shoes — it’s been unreal, really.

As my final purchase, I actually decided to get something other than shoes — one big purchase that I’ve been eyeing the past couple of months…

This is the UGG Australia Kellan Clutch. I’ve been searching for a new clutch for a while now, since all my friends are probably sick of my poor, old Betsey Johnson clutch that I usually tote around with me when we go out to dinner and such. But, I have strict requirements for a clutch — size being the most important feature — and haven’t found one I’ve loved until now.

I think that this girl will fit the bill nicely — I hope she enjoys dive bars at neighborhood Chinese restaurants where everyone is too afraid to actually eat the food, because that’s where I’ll be taking her out this weekend!

So much love to the team at OnlineShoes.com — from marketing to customer service to video production — y’all couldn’t be any better to work with.

being their first night in bunkbeds.

12/27/2011

They have been a true labor of love for Josh, but the bunkbeds are finally complete and the girls are fast asleep in them tonight for the first time. I must say, they are gorgeous — exactly what I was hoping for and made with so much love and hard work that they are even more beautiful to my eyes.

Bedding and room design details are still in progress. (yes, there will be the appearance of some chevron stripe here and there…) More on that once it’s all pulled together.

Until then, these happy faces say it all.

being the bungalow. by sarah jio. {and a little giveaway!}

12/27/2011

** This giveaway is closed. See the winner HERE. **

I’m so excited to share The Bungalow with you, the second novel by my lovely friend, Sarah Jio. It was released today and I just jumped on Amazon and ordered my Kindle version, plus some paperback copies as gifts to send to friends and family as well!

If you recall, Sarah’s first novel was The Violets of March, which was a huge success and such a thrill to read. I really can’t wait to dig into Bungalow — I’m even putting the book I’m currently reading on the back-burner because I can’t wait to get into this story!

Sarah will also be reading from The Bungalow at Ravenna Third Place Books on January 10th — I’ll be attending and I’d love to see you there!

And of course, it wouldn’t be the same without a little giveaway to mark the exciting day! I’m giving away a copy of The Bungalow by Sarah Jio to one lucky Being5 reader — I’ll even have Sarah personalize and sign it at her reading. Prefer to read it via Kindle? That’s okay too — I’m happy to send the winner their copy of The Bungalow digitally!

To enter –

Please leave a comment on this blog post telling me if you have ever been to Bora-Bora, where The Bungalow is set. If you haven’t been there, tell me who you’d take with you if you were to take a trip there.

If you’re a Facebook friend of Being5, you get an extra entry, so let me know in the comments.

One winner will be selected on Saturday, December 31, 2011 and announced shortly after. (don’t forget to enter to win a custom phone cover while you’re here! i’ll draw the winner the same day!)

being the only ones who missed the memo about santa.

12/23/2011

So… apparently we were the only ones in Seattle who missed the memo about the new Santa visit situation at Nordstrom this year. We’ve been seeing the Santa there for the past four years and although it’s at least a two-hour wait, it’s such an experience — the kids love it and so do we. Plus, the Santa is fantastic — you don’t feel rushed or crowded by the next family in line and the Santa really takes his time to talk to each child. They even ask the kids’ names in advance, so Santa calls them over by name — blows their little minds.

We get to Nordstrom last night at just after 5pm and notice that there’s no line outside — thinking we hit the jackpot, we stroll up to the front of the line with shitty grins, only to be told that there is a waiting list and they are not taking any more names tonight.

Huh?

They don’t close for another four-hours — where are all the people. I DON’T GET IT.

This year, instead of waiting in line, you put your name on the list and they call you when it’s time to come see Santa.

Okay — I totally get this approach. Make it easy for people. Let them go have dinner while they wait Whatever.

Let me also say this. I’m annoyed. (you’re surprised, aren’t you?)

First of all, there was no way in reindeer hell that all of the people who put their name on the list are going to come back to see Santa. In fact, I would venture to guess that half of those people show up when they’re called.

Second, visiting Santa at Nordstrom is only for the hardcore, dedicated bunch. The payoff is big at the end, but you go there fully realizing that you’re going to spend a million years standing in line. If you don’t want to, there are plenty of other Santas in town. Nobody in line is ever bitching about how long it takes — even the kids — and those couple of hours fly by in anticipation of seeing the big guy.

Obviously I’m feeling bitter about this. Majorly bitter. Mostly because we planned ahead for this special Santa visit — we knew the routine — and to get there and be standing with your children and have them turn you away — it will even have this girl cursing the Nordstrom name.

Luckily, this Santa visit story has a happy ending. We quickly swooped them over to Macy’s, where there wasn’t even a line and got their picture taken with Santa. It was quick and easy — about 90% less magical than visiting him at Nordstrom, but semi-effective nonetheless.

I mean we got the chance to force our screaming toddler into the lap of a stranger, so I guess it was successful in the end.

Did you go see Santa at Nordstrom this year? Tell me what you thought about the new situation.

being our annual company holiday party photo.

12/22/2011

Josh and I rarely have our picture taken together anymore. I remember when we were dating and married without kids, we took pictures all the time. I have envelopes and envelopes full of the pictures of the two of us, pre-2004 when Janie was born. At Josh’s company holiday party each year, we seem to have our picture taken, one way or another, and it usually turns out pretty good. I can’t complain much about this year’s version, although the photographer (who will remain nameless because he’s one of Josh’s bosses. ahem.) cut off my shoes in the picture, which as we know, made my outfit.

And, as a bonus picture, because Josh is giggling in the one above, here is a shot of my cute husband. With a wine glass in each hand.

Last year’s version is HERE.

being our second blog-iversary.

12/21/2011

Today marks the second blog-iversary of  Being5 — two years of blogging almost every single day, gaining more readers than I ever thought I’d have, meeting new people who have become friends and reconnecting with old friends, telling you about my life (even when you didn’t want to hear about it) and so much more.

Honestly,  I’m not sure where Being5 will go in the future. Blogging is an in the moment thing for me — I rarely plan posts in advance because I want this to be a place that is authentic to me during each moment in my life.

I have to say that it’s been quite a year — both on Being5 and in my life — and I’m thankful to have you all here with me on this crazy journey of blogging. I’m thankful for your support and sense of humor and just for being here.

Since it’s the holidays and I’m feeling lovey and I haven’t given you anything in a while, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite things right now from one of my favorite friends, who I happened to meet via all of this.

PaperCourt Press is my go-to for custom stationary and invites and now, they’ve also moved into the tech accessory biz with customized phone covers. Pick your own pattern, monogram or name style and colors to make the perfect case for you. I think my fave is the Trellis Pattern (even though, I do love that Chevron!) with the Banner Name in Simple Font. Colors are a bit harder to pin down — maybe a little orange and navy or pink and red? It’s too hard to decide! And, the best part — you don’t have to be an iPhone user to get a custom case from PaperCourt Press — they are available for the iPhone 3G/3GS, iPhone 4/4S, Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, Blackberry Bold 9700 and iPod 4G Touch.

** This giveaway is closed. See the winner HERE. **

Now, for the giveaway details –

One lucky Being5 reader will win a customized phone cover by PaperCourt Press, or one of the other phone covers that are available. Don’t have a phone that fits the PaperCourt Press covers? I’ll happily replace the cover with some custom stationary for you from PaperCourt Press instead…

Entries will be accepted until noon PST on Saturday, December 31st, when I will draw and announce a winner.

To enter, please leave a comment on this blog post telling me what your plans are for New Year’s Eve this year. (1 entry)

Also, if you’re a Being5 Facebook fan, you get an additional entry. Please let me know in the comments. (1 entry)

Just like last year’s blog-iversary giveaway, if 50 people enter the giveaway, I’ll draw an additional winner, who will receive a set of custom stationary from PaperCourt Press.

this giveaway was provided by moi — poor courtney of papercourt press doesn’t even know i’m pimping her out today.
